Skellig by David Almond
I have recently read the book Skellig, by David Almond. I read this book for book club, but the census for the book was bad. I am a little hesitant to say that, however. This book is about a boy who moves into another place, and his baby sister was recently born. He finds a strange crusty man living in his basement, and his baby is almost dying with heart problems. Overall, the book was just extremely strange. I think that the strangeness turned off many of the Book club readers. I thought that the crafting of the book and the way the book was written wasn't extremely great, however, I thought that the plot is extremely intriguing. It's something I've never really encountered in my whole life of reading. This man seems to be like an animal, and he has wings on his back. An extremely event then happens, where the mother gets a dream of Skellig, the old man, dancing with her child. After that, the child lives and Skellig disappears. The whole book is extremely confusing, and many mysteries lie unanswered. However, I bet there's tons of symbolism and meaty motifs and what not. I probably just haven't looked into this too much. The book itself has won many awards, and is apparently very well-known, but the book is from Europe. I think that is why I have never heard of it before. Overall... I'm confused by this book. I'm not sure what to think of it. Perhaps I shall delve deeper later in the year, but this book just didn't do it for me.
