The Help

I am reading the book The Help, and I love it. It is one of the most touching and possibly one of my favorite books I have ever read. I am over half way through the book, and although it doesn't start slow, the action has been mounting and mounting to the point where everything is crossed up with everything else. Three woman, Skeeter, Abileen, and Minny, are coming together to write a book about help in Mississippi. Skeeter is the daughter of rich plantation owners, but Abileen and Minny are best friends and help. Abileen is practically raising a child that isn't hers, and Minny is dealing with a crazy woman. There are so many characters that get intertwined into a huge, complicated web that can't be explained unless you read it. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in historical fiction and a very real look on the 1960's.

  1. So glad you're reading the Help! I was considering to read it, but it seems a bit intimidating. I heard it actually does start a bit slow in the beginning. Also in Book Club, I heard that there are a lot of racial barriers and that the book is also a bit biased (even though I'm sure there was plenty of racial inequality during that time). As the plot goes on, what type of themes go on with race among the woman? Also, are you sure you meant the 1960's? I'm pretty sure that rich white plantation owners existed in the late 1800s.
